JQ Promotion Opportunity for Social Enterprises

According to a letter posted by Spaghetti Gazetti, the foyer space of the Big Peg in the Jewellery Quarter is to be used to promote local social enterprises - for free.

"Just by way of context, 'exhibitors' so far have included a premium chocolatier and a paint-balling company, both of which were actually selling on the days they were here. The space will accommodate a good sized (6ft-plus) table and exhibition stands. There is a fair amount of through traffic (tenants and visitors)."

For those unaware, the Big Peg is an office block for mainly creative businesses towering over much of the Jewellery Quarter on the corner of Warstone Lane and Vyse Street. It is the sister development of the Custard Factory and also houses a police station and a post office.

Brindley Place Farmers’ Market July 2009

Yesterday I popped in to the monthly produce market at Brindley Place to stock up on fresh bread, vegetables and other goodies. I got chatting to Martin from Halfpenny Green Vineyards in South Staffordshire.

They diversified from farming into wine when I was just two years old and now have a thriving vineyard and craft centre, selling their wines from their shop and at farmers' markets across the Midlands.

I am now the proud owner of a rather lovely bottle of raspberry wine and they are now the proud owners of lots of information about 24 Carrots - the Jewellery Quarter Farmers' Market!

The Entrepreneurial Smell of Coffee

In these tough times it's really encouraging to see entrepreneurs still prepared to give it a go.

The first Urban Coffee outlet opens soon on Church Street in Birmingham's financial district. The owners have started a blog to track their progress, which should make for a fascinating read.

They describe themselves thus:

"We have no experience in retail or coffee and it's the worst economic conditions since the War!!!"

Good luck folks!

I've got a few tips for the Urban Coffee posse - if they've not done so already I suggest they check out the fantastic Saint Caffe on St. Paul's Square as a great example of how to "do" the coffee shop concept. Also, a coffee shop in that area that opens later in the evening would be greatly appreciated!
